| This Australian native with its fascinating seedpod attached to a decaying leafy sprig of “crunchy” dried leaves presented wonderful contrast in forms and textures as well as the full array of earthy colours. Presented to me by a 2003 master class student it was hastily drawn on a piece of office paper with a ball point pen (a tool I enjoy using for fine drawing) and photographed the day before I returned to the States. I should add that the shapes and curls of the leaves in this painting were sheer improvisation (fun stuff) as only three dried leaves were attached when it was presented to me. (A similar species of a living specimen has been beautifully illustrated by Ferdinand Bauer who first prepared sketches and colour notes of this plant while accompanying Mathew Flinders on his circumnavigation of Australia in 1801.) Image area: 21.3x21.3 cm (8.5"x8.5") Watercolor and color pencil on Fabriano Uno watercolor paper. This painting is available for purchase.
